The Benefit Plan covers 80% of most generic medications prescribed by doctors. To confirm if your medication is included in the plan, please check the Provincial Formulary's searchable database.
Desjardins Security Financial, along with many other insurance companies in British Columbia, uses this list of drugs that has been screened by the PharmaCare program. You can search the database using the medication's name or the DIN (Drug Identification Number), which is found on the label of your prescription.
If your database search returns the message "No Matching Drugs", this means that the particular medication you searched for is not covered under the Plan.
If your doctor prescribed a drug that is not covered by the Provincial Formulary, you may be able to have the medication covered by the Benefit Plan if you request a drug exception by following the steps below:
Step 1 - Print a copy of the Drug Exception Request Form provided below, and have your doctor complete the form for you based on your province of residence.
Step 2 - Complete a Health Claim Form, attach your receipts for that particular prescription and the completed Drug Exception Request Form.
Step 3 - Mail your documents to studentcare.net/works.
Step 4 - studentcare.net/works will advise you whether your exception has been granted. Please note: any expense for medical evidence to support a claim is the responsibility of the student.
The Benefit Plan does not cover vitamins, antihistamines, fertility, or smoking cessation products, therefore no exception will be made for these products.
